English Abstract
This study aimed at investigating the problem facing Sudanese third year secondary schools pupils in writing composition in the final year of the Sudan school certificate. The researcher used the descriptive analytical method.
The sample consisted of 90 Sudanese secondary school teachers and 300 Sudanese secondary school pupils.
Three tools of data collection were used.
These were a questionnaire, a test and an interview.
The study revealed that composition writing is really a thorny problem for third year pupils in Sudanese secondary schools.
It is found that : - A large number of pupils in the same class make it impossible for the teacher to follow them one by one. -The SPINE series at the secondary level does not offer adequate techniques for teaching composition writing. -Teachers represent the main reasons for the deterioration of pupils’ level in composition writing. -The pupils’ weakness in composition writing is due to the curriculum inadequacy. - Integration of the former intermediate stage into the current extended primary stage, which had been building a student with good based institutions in the English language. The study recommended that teachers should be trained and takes part at least in yearly training workshop whose special objectives will be to improve the techniques of teaching composition writing in Sudanese secondary schools.
The study also recommended a good environment to be provided to both teachers and pupils, motivation of the pupils, and a revision of the present curriculum in the light of the techniques of writing composition that should be included for recycling composition writing.
