English Abstract

This present research aims at evaluating the speaking skills in the English language among the 3rd & 2nd year secondary specialization school students in Libyan Jarnahiria.

Apilot study was conducted on a sample of 3rd & 2nd year secondary students .

and some English language teachers in Misurata city, which revealed the existence of poor speaking ability among those students. There fore the researcher raised three research questions in anattempt to investigate this problem. 1- What is the real status -quo of teaching the speaking skills among those students. 2- What are the main aspects of weakness with reference to the causes? 3- What are some remedial techniques which may help improving these skills? Some relative pertinent literature in the field of teaching, evaluating or developing the speaking skills in the English language is presented after a brief survey of teaching and learning the English language in Libyan Jarnahiria. Also, a theoratorical background is discussed in chapter two which tackle some aspects concerning the speaking skills. The researcher conducted Juried questionnaires to a sample of (50) students of 2nd & 3rd year students and another sample of (20) English language teachers, as well as the interviewing of some English in specious. A juried criteria was applied on the recordings of some English language lessons to evaluate the English speaking skills. Chief among the results of this research is that, although the student's general standard is considered to be average, their speaking skills are poor. Their ability to speak the English language readily is very limited, characterized by many aspects as: noticeable slow speed oral production, hesitation, as well as frequent repetition, which are probably Found to be due to a variety of causes as : 1.

Poor vocabulary. 2.

Insufficient lire time allowed to the English subject. 3.

Neglecting the assessment of the speaking skills and the teachers' over use of the mother tongue. 4.

The over concentration on the grammatical pillar. The researcher suggested some remedial techniques to overcome the effect of their reasons in order to reach smoothness in our students language when speaking the English language, as well as the researcher anticipated further topics to be investigated.
