Abstract EN
The osmotic fragility test of red blood cells (RBCs) of smokers, diabctic smokers, diabetic nonsmokers and control groups was studied.
Results verified that these groups have abnormalities in RBCs membrane and the osmotic fragility curves of the above groups were shifted to the left when compared to the control one, which is considered as an evidence for their resistance to lysis in hypotonic solutions.
From the curves we measured the mean corpuscular fragility (MCF) and the area under these curves.
We conclude that the area under the curve gives a very accurate and precise result and a clear picture of the resistance to lysis for all RBCs population, while the MCF gives a picture for a small group of RBCs population.
The Morgan-Merccr-Floon Model, for prediction, can be used to measure the area under the curves.
