Abstract EN

This research aims at studying the bankruptcy phenomenon in the Jordanian Public Shareholding Companies, and the results pertaining thereto.

In order to achicve this objective, Altman Discriminating Model was used to prcdict bankruptcy.

Alumna’s Model classifies companies with value of Z > 2.99 as strong and successful and are not expected to go bankrupt; companies with value of Z< 1.81 as wreak companies and will be expected to go bankrupt; and companies with value of Z > 1.81 and < 2.99 as companies that their susceptibility to bankruptcy cannot be predicted and need more detail analysis.

Altman’s Model was applied to seven public shareholding companies; some are strong, some are w'eak and some are bankrupt.

The results of the study show that weak companies received a value of Z < 1.8, and strong companies received a value of Z > 2.99.

Also, a questionnaire was developed and distributed among a sample of companies.

The results show that many administrative, marketing, financial, accounting, legal, economic and political reasons led to bankruptcy in public shareholding companies.

The study concludes with some recommendations that may help companies to cope with the bankruptcy phenomenon.
