Abstract EN

Objective : To assess the level of stress in patients undergoing surgical insertion of dental implant through measurement of their serum cortisol level.

Patients and methods : Ten patients undergoing surgical insertion of dental implant constitute the study population.

Five measures for cortisol serum level were done for every patient individually.

One week preoperative measure constitutes base line level, immediate preoperative measure, intra-operative measure, 4 hour's postoperative measure, and 48 hour's postoperative measure.

Results : Serum cortisol level is significantly increased in the immediate preoperative measurement (1.67 ± 0.41) compared to the base line level one week preoperatively (1.11 ± 0.27).

There was a highly significant increase in the intra-operative measurement (2.15 ± 0.15), the 4 hours postoperative measurement (1.82 ± 0.39) and significant increase in the 48 hours postoperative measurement (1.53 ± 0.25).

Conclusion : Measurement of serum cortisol level is an accurate method for measurement of stress.
