English Abstract

Diabetic septic wounds are one of the most dangerous complications of diabetes mellitus that remain major cause of morbidity and mortality in diabetic patients. The present work included collection, purification, identifications beside comparing antibiotics sensitivity and ethanolic extract of Propolis of 187 clinical strains isolated from patients with diabetic septic wounds during August 2008 and March 2009.

The Samples were collected entirely from Jabir Abo Alezz diabetic center in Khartoum State.

It was observed that diabetic septic wounds were found more frequently in diabetic male (67.3 %) than diabetic female (32.7 %).

It was also observed that both age and duration of diabetes are considered as risks factors for diabetic septic wounds.

Moreover, it was recorded that type1 diabetic patients were more prone to diabetic septic wounds with percentage 64% than type 2 diabetic patients (36 %). The clinical isolates were purified by streaking on suitable selective and differential culture media.

They were identified on the basis of the results of microscopical examinations, Gram reactions, cultural characters and biochemical tests.

The clinical strains identified as the following : Staphylococcus aureus (46 %), Enterococcus faecalis (8 %), Coagulase- negative Staphylococci (5.9 %).

Streptococcus pyogenes (2.1%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa(13.4 %), Proteus species (9.1 %), E.coli (4.8 %), Klebsiella Pneumoniae (3.7 %), Providencia species (1.1 %), Citrobacter freundii(1.6 %) and Serratia species (4.3 %).

These clinical strains were examined for susceptibility to five widely used antibiotics and ethanolic extracts of Propolis using agar diffusion method.

This work indicated that clinical isolated strains showed high levels of multidrug resistance, particularly E.

coli, Klebsiella Pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Beside that 79 % of isolated Staphylococcus aureus were methicillin resistant.

However the ethanolic extract of Propolis showed activity against gram-positive isolates only, it was highly active against Staphylococcus aureus with inhibition rate 81.4 %.
