Intestinal infections in Boufarik Hospital (Blida)‎ Algeria

We reviewed the monthly laboratory surveillance reports and hospital laboratory database in Boufarik.

All patients for whom a stool sample examination request was made from March to October 2011 were included in this study.

Antimicrobial resistance pattern was studied.

The cultures were done using standard laboratory procedures and antibiotic sensitivity by disc diffusion method.

Of the 542 stool samples examined, 60.61% showed positive result for one or more parasitic infection.

The most common were Giardia intestinalis 25 (41.67%), Endolimax nana 13 (21.67%), Pseudolimax butshlii 8 (13.33%), Entamoeba coli 6 (10%), Enterobius vermicularis 3 (5%), Blastocystis hominis 2 (3.33%), Chilomastix mesnili 1 (1.67%), Entamoeba histolytica/dispar 1 (1.67%) and Taenia saginata 1 (1.67%).

A total of 39 cultures were done, among them 39.39% showed positive result for bacterial pathogen.

The most common were Salmonella sp.

36 (92.31%), Shigella dysenteriae 2 (5.13%) and Escherichia coli 1 (2.56%).
