تستعرض هذه المقالة بداية تاريخ ظهور مرض نقص المناعة المكتسبة (الإيدز) في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية في منتصف الثمانينات و التطورات اللاحقة للمرض و إمكانية المرض في الأفراد الأصحاء مثل النساء و الأطفال الصغار (الرجال غير جنسيا و مرضى الهيموفيليا و مرضى المخدرات عن طريق الحقن الوريدية-و التعرف على المرض في أنحاء كثيرة أخرى من العالم، لأن التاريخ الوبائي للمرض أشار إلى أنه عدوى تنتقل إلى الدم و مشتقاته عن طريق الاتصال الجنسي و الذي توج عام 1984 باكتشاف الفيروس المسبب للمرض.
و تستعرض المقالة أيضا بحث التشخيص الوبائي لعدوى الإيدز و الظواهر المرضية له و كذلك تعريف حالات الإيدز و الحالات المصاحبة له و التي تؤكد المرض و الظواهر السريرية و المرضية لعدوى الإيدز- و وقع تأثير العلاج لعدوى الإيدز.

This manuscript reviews the beginning of the appearance of the AIDSsyndromein mid-1980in homosexuals in the U.S.A.
which had presented with Kaposi's sarcoma, Pneumocystis cariniiinfections, low blood T-helper cells (CD4+), and reversal of CD4 / CD8 T-cells ratio.
Later the disease appeared to be transmitted by sexual intercourse and blood products and was recognized in other parts of the world.
Originally termed "HTLV-III".
