Abstract EN
The effects of 230 kV capacitor switching on Saudi Aramco Safaniyah electric power distribution system are investigated.
Both the voltage and current transients are discussed.
The study indicates the over voltage level associated with capacitor switching is within the insulation withstand capacity of the transformers connected to a long submarine cable.
However, the current transients can lead to mis-operation of the cable differential protection if the switching occurs at, or near to, peak of the sinusoidal voltage waveform.
