Because of global popula،ion and water developments and the need for integrated water resources management with sustainable solutions, interest in artificial recharge with normal water and sewage effluent continues to increase.

Issues discussed in this paper include global water aspects, recharge with infiltration basins, environmentally friendly infiltration systems, soil-aquifer treatment of sewage effluent, potable use of water from aquifers recharged with sewage effluent, sustainability, nitrogen removal, pretreatment of sewage effluent, disinfection, disinfection byproducts, well recharge, vadose zone wells, seepage trenches, and constructed aquifers used as intermittent sand filters.
