Durability-based design, monitoring, and repair of reinforced concrete structures : a review

Corrosion of reinforcement, due to severe micro-environments and /or poor concrete quality, has caused serious damage to concrete structures.

To avoid future damage and repeated damage after repair, new approaches to durability design, monitoring, and repair of concrete structures, based on the mechanisms governing the deterioration processes, are presented.

Like the procedure for load design, design for durability should be performance-based, taking into account the probabilistic nature of the processes and material properties involved.

Testing of the durability-related quality parameters and monitoring the structures during use must be integral parts of the design and maintenance procedures for concrete structures.
