Ultrasound-guided aspiration of ovarian cysts : our experience

Objectives : To evaluate ultrasound guided cyst aspiration in the management of painful simple ovarian cysts, and also to evaluate the risk and complications associated with this procedure.

Methods : This is a prospective study of 45 single women attending gynecological outpatients’ clinic with painful simple ovarian cysts during a period of two years between 2009 and 2011 at Prince Rashid Bin-Al-Hassan Military hospital, Jordan.

Cytologic examination was performed in all cases.

The outcome was resolution or persistence of cysts.

Follow up was performed after 1 and 3 months.

Results : Out of 45 patients who successfully underwent aspiration, all experienced relief from symptoms immediately after aspiration.

At follow up, overall cyst resolution was observed in 39 out of the 45 patients (86.7 %) and symptoms persisted in 6 (13.3 %).

The cyst size was statistically significant factor in the persistence of the cyst (P < 0.05).

No evidence of malignancy was reported in the cytologic examination in any of the patients.

No major complications were observed in our study.

Conclusion : Ultrasound-guided cyst aspiration is a very simple, quick, and safe procedure, which can achieve complete ovarian cyst resolution and is an alternative to surgery.
