حضر مريض هندي الجنسية البالغ من العمر 45 عاما للعيادة و هو يعاني من مرض السكر النوع الثاني و يشتكي من ألم في الجزء الأيسر من الرقبة مصاحبة لألم في الحنجرة و ارتفاع في درجة الحرارة لمدة شهر.
و قد شخص المريض بالتهاب في الغدة الدرقية (De Quervain's thyroiditis) كبير على أساس نسبة كمية اليود المشع في الأشعة المأخوذ و التي بلغت 0 %، و قد لوحظ تحسن أعراض المريض بعد علاجه بالأدوية المضادة للالتهابات و الكورتيزون خلال 24 ساعة فقط.
