Pathological staging of laryngeal cancer

-The Classification system of head and neck cancer is of therapeutic and prognostic value.

In this study, the surgical specimens of 12 patients with carcinoma of the larynx who were managed at Saddam Teaching Hospital from 1998-2001 were reviewed.

The whole organ was sectioned at different tumour levels for post-surgicl pathological staging.

From this work, we find that: All the patients were in advanced clinical stages, the pathological grading was variable and poor prognosis was associated with poorly differentiated type.

The pathological staging delinated only 6 out of 12 to have extended beyond the perichondrium.

The removed thyroid lobes were free from the tumour.

The aims of the study were to : 1) evaluate the pathological staging 2) outline the relationship with other staging systems 3) discuss the prognostic and therapeutic impact of 1 and 2.
