Simplification or modification : what do language learners need ?

Abstract EN

This paper presents an alternative approach to language simplification؛ i.e., language clarification.

It starts with an overview in which simplification is shown to he one of the most elusive terms used in the study of language.

This is followed by a discussion of the effects of simplification on second language reading and learning.

It is shown that simplification results in tremendous alteration of the original text, and that lowering texts to the level of the learner makes it easier to teach, but not easier to learn.

The proposed approach aims at presenting the learner with authentic (unsimplified) text along with clarification techniques intended to help him/her overcome potential difficulties.

It shifts the focus of the reading process from the text to the learner, leading to developing efficient reading strategies that will help in developing analytic competence and in facilitating interpretation of the text.

Sample texts are used throughout, and comparisons and discussions held.

Conclusions and recommendations for future research are also included.
