Abstract EN

This is a study of the relationship between Ghaylan al-Dimashqi and the Umayyads.

It concentrates on the intellectual and political conflict between both sides.

Ghaylan, a Qadarite, believed in Free-will, hence he openly opposed the Umayyads and their political and monetary policies.

He practiced what he believed in, so he paid a heavy price for that, his life.

The study also deals with the origins and historical development of the question of Qadar.

It was originated in the Islamic society in early Islam, and developed as a matter of intellectual need and growth.

Thus, we minimize the importance of the influence of foreign cultures on this issue, as some scholars have suggested.
