Spondyloarthropathy : fecal flora and HLA-B27

Enterobacteria, in particular Klebsiella spp.

have been implicated in the etiopathogenesis of spondyloarthropathy.

Examination of the fecal flora of 60 spondyloarthropathy patients was performed and compared with that of 30 healthy individuals as a control group representing ordinary population.

Determination of the HLA-B27 was performed for the patients and controls.

The range of fecal flora identified was similar in both populations and there was increased isolation rate of Klebsiella spp.

in those with spondyloarthropathy.

In those patients in whom Klebsiella was identified, its presence was related to disease activity.

HLA-B27 antigen was detected in high prevalence in spondyloarthropathy patients, and also in those patients who showed high Klebsiella colonization in their intestines.
