Abstract EN

During the Abbasid era (234-417 A.H.), the social, economic!, and scientific statuses of the House of Abi Al-Shawarib had played a great role in the prominence of this family on the juridical scene.

The present study explicates the following : 1- Judges coming from the House of Abi AL-Shawarib competed with the house of Hammad Al-Azdy over juridical positions.

Accordingly, judges from both families were motivated to do their best serving and developing the juridical institution.

2- Other duties were ascribed to the Chief Judge such as: attending the pledging of allegiance to caliphs; bearing witness to the validity of the abdication of some caliphs, bearing witness to the documents to the succession to the throne; serving as ambassadors for some caliphs; and attending formal and informal ceremonies such as the appoitment of some ministers .

3- The deterioration of the economic and political situation during the period under invetigation had bad influences upon the juridical institution.

Among these bad influences was the interference of courtiers and princes to influence the appointment, abdication, or transfer of some judges .
