Acute phase proteins profile in different types of arthritis

Fifteen patients with rheumatoid arthritis (group I), 13 patients with spondyloarthropathy (group II) and 13 controls (group III) were included in this study.

Serum levels of selected acute phase proteins was studied in groups I and II and compared it with group III.

Our results showed that there were significant differences between the levels of C-reactive proteins, alpha-1 antichymotrypsin, alpha-1 proteinase inhibitor, fibrinogen, ceruloplasmin, haptoglobin, and alpha-1 acid glycoproteins as compared with controls in group I.

On the other hand a significant difference between the levels of C-reactive proteins, alpha-1 proteinase inhibitor, fibrinogen and ceruloplasmin in group II when compared with the controls.

However, no significant differences were found between the levels of alpha 1 acid glycoprotein and haptoglobin in the same group when compared with group III.

We concluded that activation of the network results in inflammation and that the persistent high levels of alpha-1 acid glycoprotein and haptoglobin may lead to the progressive destruction of joint and systemic symptoms characteristic of rheumatoid arthritis. INTRODUCTION
