Abstract EN
-Objective: Down’s syndrome patients have a longer life expectancy in the last two decades than before.
It has been found that they are prone to biochemical and hematological disorders too.
So the present study aims to assess lipids profile, blood picture, and biochemical abnormalities in DS adolescents.
Patients&Methods: Twenty three patients and 16 normal controls were sleeted to be age and sex matched.
The subjects of the study attended the genetics centre for routine check up.
Karyotyping was carried out to confirm DS.
The height, weight and blood pressure were determined in both groups.
Results: Low plasma lipoproteins, triglycerides and high plasma cholesterol levels in DS patients were observed.
The difference between patients and controls was statistically insignificant (P=0.1).
Leukemoid and blastic cellular changes were detected in a case of DS.
Three DS patients were hyperglycemic and 4 hyperuricemic.
The height, weight and blood pressure measurements showed a significant difference (P=0.01,0.001 &0.001 respectively).
Down syndrome patients were shorter, obese and hypotensive than controls.
Conclusion: The present study showed low lipids, disturbed glucose and uric acid metabolism and leukomoid changes of blood which could affect DS patients health, added to that the remarkable obesity.
So we advise for diet control , exercises and blood picture monitoring for early detection and management of any disorder.
