English Abstract

This study is concerned with the groundwater resources evaluation of Khor Abu Habil water course.

The study revealed that, the main alluvial aquifer of Khor Abu Habil has a saturated thickness of 15m and occurs under free water table condition.

The depth to the groundwater levels varies between 3 and 22m from the land surface. The aquifer receives recharge directly from the bed of the khor which is estimated to be 6 Mm³ / y.The alluvial aquifer is under lain by a discontinuous impervious clayey layer which varies in thickness between 10 and 50m (According to the geophysical survey).Groundwater in the alluvial aquifer flows from west to east with a low hydraulic gradient of (0.00001-0.0008).The seasonal water level fluctuation amounts to 2.5m.The estimated yield of the wells is low and rarely exceeds 3.5m³ / h .The hydraulic characteristics of the aquifer show a low Transsmissivity of about 67m² / day and a low permeability of 2m / day due to the dominance of silty and clayey material within the alluvial aquifer which resulted from the weathering of the source rocks.

The groundwater inflow is about 14Mm³ / y.The average surface flow calculated from the historical data between 1978and 1989 is found to be 135Mm³/y .No data is recorded from 1989until at 2003 where the average flow recorded is about 66Mm³ / y.

The minimal amount of surface water flow is due to the draught peroid.

The storage capacity of the alluvial aquifer is 200Mm³.The water quality of the alluvial aquifer is good , because the aquifer has a low mineral content which rarely exceeds 1000 ppm.

The water is suitable for domestic and irrigation purposes, but the quantity of groundwater is not sufficent for such agricultural activities.

The study recorded traces of pollution caused by uncountable faecal colliform in Turda a round El Rahad town which is releasd into the surrounding dug wells and hand pumps through the joints and fractures.

The local water Authority uses desinfection and chlorination to clean the water .The main groundwater type is, Ca-Mg-Bicarbonate and the minor water type is Na-Ca Bicarbonate water.

The Sodium adsorption Ratio (SAR) varies between 0.1 and 12 which show a good suitability for irrigation purposes.
