Abstract EN

Seven pregnant women with risk factors for postpartum haemorrhage were included in this study.

Their age ranged from (20 - 34) years.

They were requiring active management for postpartum haemorrhage due to uterine atony and placenta accreta.

The average blood loss ranged from 900 -1800 ml.

When there is blood loss, replacement must takes place.

Use of blood products other than RBCs is most common in these cases.

Platelets and fresh frozen plasma should be given as indicates by measurement of platelets count, fibrinogen level and clotting time.

After failure of medical therapy for postpartum haemorrhage, we used urological hydrostatic catheter.

It is inflated via the drainage port with 500 ml of warm saline and left in situ for 24 hours with continued oxytocin infusion.

After the procedure was completed, vaginal bleeding ceased or was much less than a menstrual flow.

No fever, chronic pelvic infection or abnormal menses observed during the 6 month flow-up.

Based on the preceding results it would appear that (Rusch) catheter is simple in its application and life saving potential.

The special advantage of this innovative technique is an alternative to major surgical procedures to control pelvic arterial pulse pressure or hysterectomy.
