English Abstract

Water pollution is a change in its nature, characteristic, till it become unfit for living creatures.

The purpose of this study is to assess the groundwater quality used as drinking water in Kadugli town, through testing of physical, chemical characteristics (pH, TDS, E.

C etc), and bacteriological analysis; (Total coli form and E.

coli bacteria ).

The results were compared by the SSMO and WHO standards.

The study area lies in the South Kordofan State, at Latitude 11 00 E, and Longitude 59 43 N.

The area of Kadugli town is about 19,505 km2.

The average altitude is about 500 m above the sea level, and the average annual rainfall is 600–700 mm.

The classification of vegetation cover is Savanna type.

Area is covered by Basement complex rocks where water is found in fracture and fault.

There are alluvial deposits in wadis and khor.

Both field and laboratory works were carried out in a systematic way in the season of summer 2005.

While some previously available data for rainy season of years 2001 & 1998 were collected and processed.

The analysis was done, using surfer-7 and Aquachem software’s.

The results found that the groundwater used for drinking purposes in Kadugli town is fit for human consumption.

However, it was seen that there is some moderate salinity and high nitrates in the southern part of the study area, and high Fluoride and Iron in the western part of the study area.

And it was found that there are bacteriological contamination in the middle part of the study area.

It was found that the comparison of results showed clearly the effect of seasons (summer and autumn), on the chemical, physical and bacteriological characteristics of water.

The study showed that the flow direction of groundwater is from south and west to north and east as indicated in the contour maps produced in this study.
