Abstract EN

With advancement in prenatal diagnosis there is an increase in the need for second trimester pregnancy terminations One of the common techniques used is the prostaglandin intrauterine extra-amniotic.

Since prostaglandins cause strong uterine contractions, many practitioners are hesitant to use this technique on women with a uterine scar.

This study was done to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of prostaglandin (PGE2) by intrauterine extra-amniotic way for women with a previous uterine scar This study was done at El-Noor Hospital (In Holy Makka) from February 1999 to February 2000 in collaboration with the Ob / Gyn department in Bab El-Sharia Hospital, Al-Azhar University .

Patients subjected to this study were in their 2nd trimester (14-28 Wks) with evidence of missed abortion or intrauterine foetal death.

They divided into two groups study group (70), with history of at least one previous C.S.

scar, and control group (50 patients) with unsacred uterus.

PGE 10 mg in 50 ml saline and 5 mg in 50ml saline by rate of 10 cm / hourly were used intrauterine extra-amniotic in unsacred and scared uterus respectively using Foley's Catheter.

From this study we found no difference in the abortion interval, the need to use an additional method, the need for curettage and in bleeding need for blood transfusion between the two groups.

There was no case of uterine rupture.

Conclusion : Our results suggest that extra-amniotic prostaglandins is an effective and safe technique in women with a uterine scar .
