Serum leptin in delayed puberty : dependence on gender, adiposity and fasting insulinemia

his is a cross-sectional case study, which is planned in order to evaluate serum Ieptin in hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and its relation with serum insulin and patient gender and adiposity.

80 subjects were chosen at Ain Sham University hospitals divided into 2 groups: The patients’ group comprised 40 patients with delayed puberty.

They were selected to be 10 obese males, 10 non-obese males, 10 obese females and 10 non-obese females.

And the control group, comprised 40 apparently healthy subjects.

Like the patients’ group they were subdivided into 4 corresponding groups, 10 subjects each, matching these patients’ groups.

The inclusion criteria were: age, 16 + years for females, 18 + years for males, patients with BMI > 30 and < 25 were considered obese and non obese respectively and all patients had isolated hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.

Whereas, the exclusion criteria were: manifestation(s) suggestive of other causes of delayed puberty.

The control subjects were chosen just completing their pubertal development (just reaching Tanner stage (5).

Beside, the estimation ofFSH, LH, testosterone in males, estrogen ln females, TSH, prolactin as well as serum basal insulin and leptin, other tests were performed: radiological studies to determine bone age, pelvic ultrasound for female patients and CT study on sella turcica and pituitary gland was already carried out by some patients.
