Abstract EN

Lp (a) has an atherogenic and thrombogenicproperties, it is considered to be a major risk factor for the development of atherosclerotic disease in both diabetic and non-diabetic population.

Data relating Lp (a) to diabetic complications are limited and their results are controversial. Our study aimed at finding out the behaviour of Lipoprotien (a) in association with other lipid profiles in various diabetic patients.

Identifying the relation between Lp (a) and microalbuminuria and its potential association with some diabetic complications. This study was conducted on 60 subjects divided into four groups: Group f ( Q~15) NfDDM with microalbuminuria, Group ff (n = 15) fDDM with ^icroalbuminuria Group fff (n-15) diabetic patients (both NfDDM and WDM) without microalbuminuria and Group fV (n=15) normal controls.

a°h subject underwent a full clinical examination, ECG, fundus e*amination, routine laboratory and special investigations including serum lP°protein (a), total lipid profile, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbAfC) and ^ifroalbumin uria. jj3 our study, no significant diffrence was found comparing the three groups and III to each other as regards, their serum creatinine, total cholestrol, HDL, LDL and serum triglyceride levels (P > 0.05).

On the other hand highly significant difference was showed comparing the three groups to control as regards serum triglyceride values, another significant differed was found between groups I and III in comparison to group TV as regard HDL, and between group I and IV as regards serum LDL.

The mel glycosylated hemoglobin levels for group IV (control) showed a highly significant (P < 0.001) lower values when compared to each of the other thrL groups. Regarding Lp(a) values in this study, nonsignificant difference was obtained comparing groups I, II and III with each other as well as comparing each of them with the control group.

In our study, no significant correlation obtained between Lp(a) values and any of the other laboratory parameters in all the studied groups, so that, there is no significant increase in serum Lp(a) in both IDDM, NIDDM patients with or without microalbuminuria when compared to normal control group subjects included in our study.

No relation has been found between the glycemic control, lipid profile or diabetic complications on one hand and the Lp(a) level on the other hand. From our study, we can conclude that there is no significant increase of serum Lp(a) in NIDDM, IDDM patients with or without microalbuminuria compared to normal control group in subjects included in this study.

Also no relation between glycemic control and Lp(a) and other lipid profile, occurance of neuropathy or retinopathy in the studied groups.
