Relations among the triangle of peace (1973-1979)‎ : the US role as a third party : asset or liability for conflict management ?

Abstract EN

This study uses the structural change of relations among the so-called “ triangle of peace” in the Middle East (the US, Egypt, and Israel) during the 1970’s as a case study for the third party role in protracted conflict management, on one side.

On the other, it uses the first round of the Arab- Israeli peace process as an asset for the other peace negotiations to take place in the 1990’s.

As such, a particular emphasis will be directed to the correlations of relations among the three major parties ; the US, Egypt, and Israel.

The purposeful action is to empirically illustrate, comment on, and examine the US mediation.

Furthermore, this study reports the results of the events- data analysis concerning the trilateral relations and their correlations to one another.

In the last analysis, a structural change in the US-Egyptian relations in the 1970’s was a prerequisite for a similar change in the Egyptian- Israeli discourse.

The US- Egyptian relations have partially determined the degree of Egyptian- Israeli cooperation.
