Abstract EN

Antiphospholipid antibodies (APL) are antibodies that recognize epitopes formed by anionic phospholipids and protein cofactors.

Beta 2-glycoprotein-I (j32-GP-I) is the cofactor for binding of anticardiolipin antibodies to their ligands.

Our work aims at studying the possible relation between (32 GP-1 antibodies and coronary artery disease in diabetics.

We conducted a case-control study comprising 80 subjects; 20 healthy control subjects (Group 1), 20 type 2 diabetics [T2DM] with coronary artery disease [CAD] (Group 2), \ 20 obese T2DM without CAD (Group 3) and 20 non-obese T2DM without | CAD (Group 4).

Antibody to (32glycoprotein 1 ((32-GP-l IgG) was measured | in sera of the 80 subjects by ELISA technique.

Diabetics with IHDhad a ‘ significantly higher titer of anti-(32 GP-1 (12.85± 1.04 SGU) when compared i to both groups of diabetics without IHD (12.04± 0.63 SGU;p < 0.001)and j when compared to each group alone (12.04 ± 0.34 SGU for obese diabetics, p I < 0.001 and 12.12 ± 0.83 SGU for non-obese diabetics, p > 0.01).

However, | control group had a titer which was not significantly different from diabetics j with IHD ( p > 0.05), but was higher than diabetics without IHD (p < 0.01 I for comparison with the obese group and < 0.05 for comparison with the j non-obese group).

The diabetics with CAD differed from diabetics without CAD only in having a higher BMI, W/Hratio and a lower HDL level; they not differ in age, duration of diabetes, blood pressure, glycemic indices, ttbAlc, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol or triglycerides.

We conclude that ti-(32-GP-l IgG may play a role in predisposing to or precipitating c°ronary artery events in diabetics.

Whether it is a primary abnormality or 3n epiphenomenon to atherosclerosis will need further study.
