This article traces the development of physical medicine and rehabilitation in India, which is an emerging field of medical practice in the country.

The author discusses the different models of medical practice that are prevalent for the care of disabled individuals and their lacunae, and makes some suggestions for the growth of physical medicine and rehabilitation in India, with special emphasis on a holistic approach which is comprehensive, cohesive and cost-effective.
