The aim of this prospective study was to assess the causes which led to amputation in general and lower limb amputations in particular.
The study was performed on 51 patients, having amputations of upper or lower limbs.
The age of patients, ranged from 3 years to 70 years.
14 patients (27.45%) were above 50 years of age and 37 patients (72.54%) were below 50 years of age.
Out of 51 patients 43 (84.31%) were males and 08 (15.68%) were females.
The upper limb amputations were 9.803% while the lower limb amputations were 90.196%.
All patients were consulted at the Patient Care Centre of the Pakistan Institute of Prosthetic and Orthotic Sciences, Peshawar during the period of three months (March 2002 to May 2002).
History of the patients was recorded through the questionnaire.
The questions asked were such as, area of residence, educational level, profession, amputation, level of amputation, cause of amputation and sub cause of amputation.
