English Abstract

Desalination of water means getting rid of the cations and anions in salty sea water or ground water.

This process is costly due to the rising prices of energy.

In Port Sudan, the need of desalination emerged when there is no sufficient amount of fresh water from the conventional water resources.

To overcome the water shortage in such case, it is important to develop the non conventional water resources.

Hence it is most important to use the right selection among different choices.

The main objective of the study is focusing on the feasibility of Port Sudan desalination Plant; which uses the Reverse Osmosis process.

Also this study is aiming to make a comparison between different types of desalination mechanisms.

These parameters will give a good indication for the plant performance technically and economically.

After studying the water situation in Port Sudan and desalination plant, it can be stated that the plant fulfilled some of its targets.

Thus it needs some improvements to raise its performance.

These improvements include substituting the cellulose membranes by polyamide membranes, to make use of bi-products in salt industry.

The system will be more efficient if it is coupled with a small size (2000 m³ / day) thermal desalination system ; where heat is recovered from both exhaust gases and the cooling jacket water circuit.
