Clinical study of skin tumours in Basrah

A total of 34 patients with skin tumours were studied during a period of two years (2000-2001).

Their age ranged between 7-72 years with a mean age of 48.2years.

The M: F ratio was 1.8 : 1.

The skin tumours were malignant in twenty cases (58.8 %) while the benign tumours were reported in 14 patients.

Among the malignant tumours, basal cell carcinoma (60 %), squamous cell carcinoma (20 %) and mycoses fungoides (15 %) were the commonest tumours reported.

On the other hand, pyogenic granuloma (35.7 %) and syringoma were the commonest benign tumours.

The face, the dorsum of the hands andfingers were the sites of predilection for both the benign and malignant tumours.

The incidence of skin tumours among the attendants of the outpatient dermatology department had relatively increased during the last few years (1999-2001) in comparison with that of the early nineties and late eighties (1989-1991).

In conclusion, skin tumours, are not uncommon in our country at the time being, its incidence is noticebly increasing involving a relatively younger age groups.
