Eosinophilia : a maker for asthma severity

This is a prospective study to look for the role of total peripheral eosinophil count to aid in assessment of severity of bronchial asthma beside symptoms and peak flow rate.

Asthmatic children who were admitted to Basrah Maternity and Children Hospital from July 2000 till April 2001 were included.

There were 140 asthmatic children included in the study, their age ranged from (1.5-15)years.

There is a significant association between increasing mean eosinophil count and increasing asthma severity.

There is no such association in regard to sex of patient.

Children older than 5years have significant eosinophilia with increasing severity of asthma, while children younger than 5years show no such association.

History ofpersonal allergic diseases was present in 21.4% of cases with significant eosinophilia.
