Is ovarian ultrasound mandatory in post-adolescent aene female patients?

Acne is the most common skin disease.

Although ا؛ is not و life-threatening disease, it has significant physical and psychological ramifications, and considered to be an indicator for some major clinical conditions, like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) which is the most frequently acne associated hormonal disease.

PCOS can only be detected for sure by ultrasonography.

So detection of the frequency ofoccurance of PCOS in women with post-adolescent acne help in early detection and proper management.

Aim ٠/ the work: To determine the frequency of occurcence of PCOS in post-adolesccnt acne female patients.

Subjects and Methods: 43 female patients aged 25 years or more suffering from acne vulgaris.

And 43 regularly menstroating female as a control group.full history was taken.Local and Ultrasound examination in addition abdominal sonography to detcct supra-renal mass was done for each subject.

Results: 14% had irregular cycles, 70% had premenstrual tension syndrome and 91% had premenstrual fiare of acnc.

Ultrasound Findings: 39.5% had PCO, and 7% had single ovarian cyst while 53.5% had normal ovarian findings.

In general, only 9.3% had PCOS which jumped to 83.3% among those wilh severe acnc, while 66.6% of patients with acne and irregular menstrual cycles had PCO.

Summary and Conclusions: The most common cause of hyperandrogencmia is PCOS, the majority of female patients with acne often have no other clinical features of the syndrome, in our study, 39.5% of post-adolescent female acne patients had ultrasonic findings of PCO.

This is high enough to warrant the physician looking for this abnormality in women presenting with post-adolescent acne.
