تم استعمال مستخلص قشور الرمان شعبيا في علاج الإسهال على نطاق واسع.
و قد برر استعماله في علاج الجيارديا حاليا لشيوع هذا المرض و تكرار الإصابة به و عدم وجود دواء فعال لعلاجه.
مائة و خمسون مصابا بالجيارديا (وجود الطور الحركي في فحص البراز) تم اختيارهم و قسموا عشوائيا إلى مجموعتين.
أعطي خمسون منهم مستخلص قشور الرمان فيما أعطي للمجموعة الأخرى (مائة مصاب) علاج المترونيدازول للمقارنة.
أظهرت النتائج أن الطور الحركي للجيارديا قد اختفى من براز المصابين بنسبة أكبر في المجموعة الأولى و كان تأثير المستخلص أكثر ثباتا في منع تكرار الإصابة و كذلك في اختفاء الأعراض السريرية مقارنة بمجموعة المترونيدازول.
نستنتج من ذلك أن مستخلص قشور الرمان كان أكثر فعالية من المترونيدازول في علاج الجيارديا و منع تكرار الإصابة بها.
و الخياطة الأولية مع إعطاء المضادات الحيوية وقائيا و بعد العملية ضد أنواع العنقودية و العصوانية.
و تمت متابعة الحالات على مدى عشرين شهرا.
و كانت نسبة الذكور إلى الإناث 3 : 1.
و تراوحت أعمارهم من 15-45 سنة و بمعدل 25 سنة و كان لـ 90 % منهم تاريخ مرضي أقل من سنتين و 10 % فقط كانت له معالجة سابقة على شكل نزح الخراج.
و فشل مريضان (2.5 %) في الحصول على الالتئام و رجع المرض عند مريضين آخرين.
و كان المرض سطحيا عند 90 % من المرضى و معظم المرضى عاد إلى عمله في 3-4 أسبوع.
إن طريقتنا في الاستئصال المحدود تحت الرؤية المباشرة مع الإرواء و الغلق الأولي توفر بديلا فعالا و للعلميات التقليدية لجيب البؤرة الشعرية العجزي العصعصي، حيث أنها تحافظ على الآليات التشريحية الوظيفية و لها نسبة مراضة ضئيلة و مدة بقاء قصيرة في المستشفى و معدل شفاء سريع و معدل رجعة منخفض.
Abstract EN
Pomegranate peel extract have been traditionally used in treatment of diarrhea.
Its use in treatment of giardiasis isjustified by the wide spread of, recurrence of and there is no effective treatment for giardiasis.
One hundred and fifty patients, who are stool positive for G.lamblia (trophozoite), were included in the study.
Fifty of them were selected randomly and treated by the extract.
The other (n-100) were treated by metronidazole as control group.
Both groups were examined after 7 days of treatment and one month lator.
Trophozoite of G.lamblia were detected less frequently in patients treated with the extract as compared with metronidazole after the 7 days of treatment and one month after.
The clinical improvements were more perm inant in the extract group as were the lab.

The study concluded that pomegranate peel extract is more effective than metronidazole in treatment of giardiasis and prevention of its recurrence.
