Abstract EN

To investigate the possible mecbanism(s) responsible for the captopril-induced cough and dyspnea, the functional granulocyte activity and pulmonary function tests (TEJ / 1, Fl / C, FEV1 %, MEF, PEF, MW and lung age) wen measured in thirty, non smoking, middle-agedfemales with WHO stage I essential hypertension treated either with captopril alone (n-10), atenolol alone (n-10) or other antihypertensive measures (controlgroup), (n-10).

Atenolol reduced the values of lungfunction test, while captopril did not affect the pulmonary function tests (ventilation) significantly, but it had a marked inhibitory effect on the functional granulocyte activity if compared to the control groups.

These results addfurther support to the view that the captopril -induced cough and dyspnea could be due to alteration of the body mediator release rather than ventilation disturbances.
