Type II diabetes mellitus : presentations, complications and treatment

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common endocrine disease.

Its prevalence is increasing all over the worlds.

The aim of this study was to study a sample of patients with type II DM in Basrah.

A Prospective follows up study conducted in Basrah military hospitalfrom December 1994 to December2000, including patients with type II DM.

Total numbers ofpatients were 256patients, of them 147 males.

All were above the age of 29years.

Of total patients, 102 were new cases of DM discoveredfor the first time.

39.3 % of new cases were discovered because of complication, and of them 59.8% were having established long-term complications at time of diagnosis.

The commonest long-term complication of allpatients at end of this study was neuropathy in 48.8 %.

Hypertension was seen in 32 %.

The compliance of patients with diet was poor in 56.1%.

Oral hypoglycemic used in 74.6 % ; insulin in 8.9 % and 15.2 % were treated with diet alone.

We had 81.9 % having suboptimal control of their DM.

About 41.7 % of patients have weight above normal.

Type II DM discovered late in Basrah.

Some of the patients discovered for the first time due to advanced complications.

The compliance of patients on diet was poor; insulin was underused and the majority having suboptimal control.
