English Abstract

The on-going experience at the private schools, of teaching children a foreign language at grade one of the basic-level schools, drew the attention of the researcher and generated a number of reasonable questions.

The researcher, and from field experience, noticed the deterioration in English language standards in, almost, all levels of education in Sudan.

The main question of this study is, what is the effect of learning a foreign language at an early age on the children's mother-tongue achievement?.

Sub-questions also emerged; if it has a positive effect, why does not the ministry of education generalize the experience in all the basic level schools.

The researcher hypothesized that, there is a positive effect to this experience as children got the opportunity to widen their brains- cognitive flexibility and their linguistic competence.

To measure this hypothesis and the other sub-hypotheses, the researcher used the stratified random sampling method to choose the subjects of the study.

Two groups of students from both government and non-government schools are selected from Omdurman Province.

The total number of the subjects is four hundred and fifty divided by ratio of two to one.

Sixty Arabic Teachers are selected randomly from the private sector to participate in the study.

The instruments utilized to measure the study hypotheses are of two natures.

Two standardized tests in Arabic and English languagesand a questionnaire established for the Arabic teachers in the non-government schools.

The data collected by these tools are computed and statistically treated as shown in chapter three.

The results obtained by the data analysis and discussion reveal that there is a positive effect of learning of foreign language on the children's achievement of their mother tongue as all the investigation results show advantage to the private schools students to over their peers in the government schools.

Another finding also emerged as a positive correlation in achievement is noticed between the two languages.

One of the important findings of this study in that there is gender language variation in Arabic achievement fir the female students.

On the other hand, there is no significant variation in English language achievement between boys and girls.

The Arabic teachers questionnaire results, authenticated the results gained by the achievement tests and proved all the study hypotheses correct.

The Arabic teachers in the private schools and from field experience recommended teaching English to Sudanese children as early as grade one of the basic-level schools.

Their experience, they said succeeded in developing basic language skills which helped better achievement in the Arabic language.
