The need for randomness ( unpredictability ) of binary sequences was the major reason for developing new statistical tests for randomness properties in a binary sequence.

The theory of statistics provides us with quantitive measures for randomness.

The linear complexity to chech that the numper of bits required to be known to reconstruct the sequence is as long as the sequence itself.

The change point to check that the number of transitions (from 1 to zero or from zero to 1) is approximately normally distributed.

The power spectrum of the autocorrelation aoeffecient should not be significatly different from the expected value for a random sequence.
