English Abstract

This study aims at exploring the impact of ESP program on the Medicine and Medical Sciences students at Um Al-Qura University.

The major objectives of the study are to determine the effectiveness of the program, the appropriateness of its contents to the needs of the students and the different procedures used in teaching the course and assessing the students' achievement.

The sample of the study consists of forty nine students from the College of Medicine and Medical Sciences, six English language teachers, and nine instructors from the College of Medicine and Medical Sciences.

To obtain the necessary information, three questionnaires have been designed; one for the students, another one for the language teachers and the third for the subject teachers.

Since this study adopts the descriptive analytical method, the responses of the stakeholders were analyzed using (SPSS) program.

The results were presented and discussed in the light of the questions of the study.

The findings obtained through data analysis confirm that the program on the whole is effective and successful and that it is appropriate in most of its aspects.

However, some of the aspects need to be revised and modified.

Finally, a set of recommendations can be put forward and these include : a-employ more specialist staff members; b-reconsider the course type and its duration; c-replace some of the textbooks used in teaching the course; d-adopt an integrated approach to language teaching; e-reconsider the present and the target needs of the students; f-increase the degree of cooperation between the ELC and the parent college ; g-using new technology in teaching the language (e.g.

language labs, computers, internet, etc.) ; h-using continuous assessment to determine the students' progress and achievement.
