Ankle fusion using Ilizarov technique

Objective : this study aimed at evaluating the results of using Ilizarov technique in ankle fusion.

Patients and method : This study included eight patients who were treated with ankle fusion for different etiologies.

Seven ankles were fused because of posttraumatic ankle arthritis and only one ankle was fused because of painful instability resulted from residual poliomylitis.

The average age was 43.75 years (35-52 y).

They were seven males and one female.

Right to left side affection was 5: 3.

Ring fixator (Ilizarov) was used till achieving solid fusion.

The clinical and radiological follow up continued for 6 to 11 months with an average 8.2 months.

Results : Most patients had fused stable painless ankle at the end of follow up and they also had good ankle and foot alignment with plantigrade foot.

Some complications were met but satisfactory results were obtained in all cases.

Conclusion : Ilizarov technique is considered a valuable tool to achieve solid ankle fusion.
