Abstract EN

In this paper, the effect of unidirectional plastic strain accumulation, introduced to the surface of the slower moving body during rolling-sliding line contact, on the early stages of surface damage has been investigated.

The results showed that the direction of the accumulative plastic strain relative to the load movement plays the most important role in dictating the surface life to failure of pearlitic steel.

Enough evidence has been given to suggest that the morphology of the surface layer deformed structure is highly significant in helping or hindering surface rolling contact fatigue failure.
