Computer is one of the most important tools of the modern highway engineer to assist him in his work which is laborious and time consuming.

Geometric design by computer is efficient, quick, practical, economic and automatic.

In this paper a computer program for highway geometric design which consists of (3) sub programs (Horizontal, Vertical, Earthwork) which is called (HGD) was written.

It was assumed that location of the route must be known together with the coordinates of the points of intersection which are feeded to the computer.

Conventional method was used in horizontal alignment design which joints the straight lines by circular and transition curves.

Smoothing the ground along the center line was used for vertical alignment, and then the profile was fitted with tangent lines and parabolic curves.

It was then modified to obey geometric design standards and constraints on level by adjusting the position of the curves.

Five projects were taken from TRRL reports, the results of design by the (HGD) program were compared with those taken from the TRRL reports.

It was found that the results were close together and they obey the geometric design standards.

Two local projects designed by die program were compared with manual design.

The results showed that flatter and longer curves as well as longer sight distances are obtained with the computer program than those obtained by manual design.
