The influence of shear on the deformation characteristics and ultimate strength is examined for under- and over-reinforced concrete “beams” of widely different aspect ratios.

One-dimensional and multi-dimensional material formulations are developed using several plasticity-based failure criteria.

Models for both ductile and brittle materials are incorporated in the study.

The finite element method in its nonlinear format is utilized in the research.

Layered degenerated isoparametric curved beam elements with nonhomogeneous and arbitrary cross sections are adopted for the inelastic analysis.

Axial, bending, and shear deformations are all included in the two-, three-, and four-node Timoshenko shear beam elements.

An incremental—iterative solution procedure is formulated and incorporated for the solution of nonlinear equations.

Curves for the influence of shear on the ultimate load for different types of beams are developed.

Load-deformation curves along with plots for stress distributions and cracked/yielded/failed zones at different stages of loading are drawn for some beam samples.
