يتناول البحث وصف الطريقة المباشرة Direct Method في تدريس اللغات الأجنبية، فيبدأ بعرض موجز لوسائل التدريس الكلاسيكية حتى نهاية القرن التاسع عشر، ثم يحدد أهداف الطريقة المباشرة و مزاياها المتعددة في التدريس، رغم المصاعب التي قد تواجه المدارس الذي يستخدم هذه الطريقة، مثل عدم استخدام اللغة الأم في شرح الدرس بغية تأسيس علاقة أو رابطة مباشرة بين الصورة الذهنية للشيء و مدلولها في اللغة الأجنبية.
ثم ينتقل الباحث إلى التطبيق العملي لهذه الطريقة مثل بعض الخطوات و القواعد التي يجب اتباعها، سواء في فصول المبتدئين أو المتوسطين أو المتقدمين الذين يطلق عليهم الباحث اسم "فصول المحادثة".
و يورد الباحث مثالا مطولا عن الطريقة التي يمكن أن يتبعها المدرس في تعليم المفردات و التراكيب الجديدة لتلاميذه في مواقف شبيهة بالمواقف الحياتية اليومية.
ثم يتناول الباحث في شيء من التفصيل "فصول المحادثة" و كيفية تنويع النشاطات التعليمية في الفصل لشد اهتمام التلاميذ أكبر وقت ممكن، مثل نشرات الأخبار و مسابقات الهجاء و إعادة قص الحكايات القصيرة و إعداد موضوعات للمحادثة، و صور الكارتون و لعبة العشرين سؤال، و كذلك نشاطات النادي الإنجليزي، مثل شرائط الأفلام و الشرائح الزجاجية و المعارض و تمثيل الأدوار.
Abstract EN
The paper describes in detail the direct method of teaching Foreign languages.
It starts with the historicalbackground method up to the end of the 19th century.
The paper then goes into listening and explaining the objectives of the direct method and its unique characteristics as a language teaching method.
Although some difficulties are expected such as the strict non-use of the mothertongue in the classroom, the teacher is expected to create a direct link between the visual image of something and its connotation in the Foreign language in the minds of his students.
The.writer then details the practical application of the method in the different levels of EFL classroom.
A lengthy example of classroom techniques is presented which deals with areas such as vocabulary,grammar, daily life situations.
Then the writer shows through what he calls (conversational classes) the different varieties of learning activities as to attract the full attention of his students.
