A spectrophotometric method for determination of ferric ion has been developed, based on the complex formation between ferric ion and 2r4-dihydroxybenzoie acid at pH 6.0-7.0 (ammonium acetate buffer).

This method allows the determination of 0.2-14.0 ppm of iron (III) (£=2.5 x 105 L.

cm'1 at 460 nm).

Interferance of most common cations were tolerated by using sodium fluoride as a masking agent.

The method has been applied to the assay of iron in three commercially formulated drugs.
