Kinetic studies of the reaction of some2-amino alkyl bromides with hydrosulfite ion in solutions of different pH

The rates of reaction of 2-amino propyl, butyl, pentyl bromide and 3-amino-2-bromobutane, A(l-4), with hydrosulfite ion in aqueous media of different pH have been studied.

Rate dependence on pH in acidic and basic media has been established.

The study indicated first-order dependence on each of reactants and inverse unit dependence on [H+] in acidic medium, while no effect of pH on rates was noticed in basic medium.

Studies of rates in media of various ionic strength supported the possibility of reaction to occur with different mechanism, in each medium.

The effect of alkyl groups next to amino group on the rate showed that electronic factors play reasonable role on the stability of the intermediates in both media.

Suggested mechanisms, which are consistant with the results, have been postulated and suitable rate lawa in consonance with the suggested mechanisms have been derived
