Abstract EN

This paper investigates the thinning process of hand-writter Arbabic characters to obtain a simplified skeleton version.

Firstly, the paper reviews some widely used thinning algorithms.

Implementation and application of these algorithms for thinning hand-written Arabic characters have shown that these algorithms suffer from the erosion problem.

In addition to that, these algorithms are not capable of thinning the sub-pattern.

7 associated with some Arabic characters to a single pixel.

Then an algorithm for thinning Arabic characters is introduced.

This algorithm is then applied to different sample characters.

A comparison is then made which proves the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Implementation is carried out at an IBM-AT computer system using the programming language Pascal
