The study discusses the development of a Frame Assembler and Disassembler (FAD) to be used in packet radio communications.
The FAD can gain access to packet switched networks at the link and physical protocol layers.
The FAD is a microprocessor based unit with two external interfaces; one is connected to the user computer/ terminal, the other, to a radio transceiver through which data link is maintained.
Research, therefore consisted of work in both hardware and software fields.
A flexible hardware and software has been produced and the performance has been tested over simulated radio frequency channels as well as some limited field trials using HF/VHF radio equipment to demonstrate the FAD main operational characteristic as a channel monitor and controller over packet radio communication system networks.
