A Stereoscan study of the origin of ciliated cells in the embryonic epidermis of Bufo orientalis

The development of cilia in the embryos of Bufo orientalis was studied by stereoscan electron microscope.

Examinations at low magnifications show that the ciliary cells are distributed over almost the whole embryos as alongish ciliary tufts arranged in rows.

The surfaces of all cells have a warty structure appearance.

SEM studies at higher magnifications show that the ciliary tufts are localized to certain isolated cells.

These tufts form branching-like trees.
